Chapter I · 13th century
The Table That Was Never Arthur’s
Winchester · SU 477 294
Malory placed Camelot at Winchester, and the city has a round table to prove it, hanging in the Great Hall. Tree-ring dating puts the timber in the late thirteenth century, under Edward I. Henry VIII had it painted with a Tudor rose and a King Arthur who looks remarkably like Henry.
A legend, it turns out, can be manufactured. This one was, twice.
